Janet Hoek joined the Department in 2009; her first degrees were in English Literature, with minors in Botany and Zoology, and her Masterate examined irony in Beowulf, a very early medieval poem. The weak employment market for medievalists prompted her move from the Dark Ages to the Dark Side, and she subsequently completed a post-graduate diploma in marketing and a PhD.
Janet’s main research interests are in marketing and public policy. She leads the tobacco-free communications theme within ASPIRE 2025, a research consortium comprising New Zealand's leading tobacco control researchers working to support a tobacco free Aotearoa by 2025.
Janet also leads an HRC project examining plain packaging and tobacco branding, and has been involved in many tobacco control studies. Janet works closely with colleagues in the Department of Public Health (Wellington) on both tobacco and obesity (food marketing) projects. She has been a member of several NGO and government advisory groups, provided evidence to government and Select Committees, and is currently a member of an Australian government tobacco control panel.
Janet was a member of the ANZMAC executive from 2003-2008, including two years as Secretary, three years as chair of the Awards Committee, and two years as Vice President, and in 2009 she was made a Distinguished Member of ANZMAC.
Janet will be contributing to Societal Issues in Marketing (MART 305) and teaching Advanced Societal Issues in Marketing (MART 439). She is also involved in postgraduate supervision and is always keen to talk with students who feel intrigued by the research questions she is trying to address.
Outside work, Janet enjoys long walks (the Dunedin hills are a new challenge to her), good wine, baroque violin, reading, and taming her family’s psychopathic cat.
