PhD Title
Tramper's and Hunter's Constructions of Nature and Tensions in the Outdoors
Supervisors
Professor James Higham and Dr Anna Thompson
Research Abstract
This research aims to explore the constructions of nature of hunters and trampers, in order to identify and understand any tensions that may be inherent in these constructions that may be, at times, in conflict. To facilitate this understanding I am examining the historical processes that relate to hunting and tramping and the social norms and values associated with these activities throughout time in the New Zealand context. Moreover, through an interpretivist approach, performances, narratives and discourses of hunters and trampers are analysed and discussed to provide the arguments that will eventually build the thesis. In doing so, I expect to be able to relate hunting and tramping to broader social issues and discuss the meanings they attach to their practices in relation to philosophies of environment present in society.
