Bachelor of Tourism with Honours

This information is for students already in the Honours programme prior to 2007.

Four-year undergraduate degree incorporating a dissertation. Students should consider this option during the first and second years of a BTour, but students can gain entry at the end of their first, second or third year of study.

Traditionally an Honours degree signals an academically above average student who has taken extra time to develop study in their major subject to achieve a higher level of knowledge and understanding. Entrance to Honours is based on grades in previous papers. Students can apply at the end of their 100-level courses, and a B+ average in Tourism papers is normally expected for entry. The Honours degree specifically gives students the opportunity to develop both their academic and practical research skills. Students are given the opportunity to undertake a research dissertation in their fourth year. In addition to providing the best preparation for post-graduate work (e.g. MTour or PhD) these skills are highly desirable for graduates who may wish to work in or deal with tourism research, consultancy, policy and other industry level analysis.

Structure of the BTour (Hons).

NOTE: It is not possible for an honours student to complete a minor (this applies to all disciplines).

Combined Honours Degrees

Students are able to undertake study towards a Combined Honours degree with Tourism and another subject, for example – Marketing. Students would take a combination of both Marketing and Tourism at their 200, 300 and 400 levels and complete their Honours Dissertation covering a topic from both subject areas. This degree can be completed in the same timeframe as a single Honours degree. Students must be admitted to the Honours programmes for each discipline.

Double Honours Degrees

Students are able to undertake study towards a Double Honours degree and this is similar to the Combined Honours format but undertake two Fourth years – you complete all the 400-level papers and a dissertation from both disciplines. Students must be admitted to the Honours programmes for each discipline.

Entry Requirements

At least a B+ average in previous year of study across BTour Major subjects.

Entry into the programme is by application only.
