World leading database expert comes to Otago Business School

27 January 2012

Chris Date, a world-renowned expert and thinker on database technology, is presenting his course "SQL and Relational Theory" at the University of Otago on March 5 and 6, 2012.

"This is a unique opportunity for New Zealand database professionals, both in academia and industry," says Dr Nigel Stanger of the Department of Information Science, who is organising the Dunedin event.

"Chris Date is one of the most influential researchers in the database field, and almost everyone who has taken a database course will have heard of him. This may be the only chance that we in New Zealand get to see him in person."

This is the first of three events organised by the New Zealand Oracle Users' Group (NZOUG), and will be held in the Business School (the other two events will be held in Wellington and Auckland).

C.J. Date is an independent author, lecturer, researcher, and consultant of international renown, specialising in relational database technology.

While working at IBM in the 1970s Chris was involved in technical planning and design for the products SQL/DS and DB2. He also helped popularise Edgar F. Codd’s relational model for database management.

His book An Introduction to Database Systems, currently in its 8th edition, is widely regarded as one of the fundamental texts on the subject. He is also the author of many other books on data management, most notably Databases, Types, and the Relational Model, subtitled and commonly referred to as The Third Manifesto, currently in its third edition, a detailed and sweeping proposal for the future direction of DBMSs.

The New Zealand Oracle Users Group was founded in 1989. It is open to all users of Oracle products and provides a forum for them to share ideas and interests, both online and at regular regional events.
