What could persuade someone to come all the way from Atlanta, Georgia to study in Dunedin? For Scott Cohen, it was simple - Otago’s reputation. The reputation of the University of Otago, and in particular the Department of Tourism, had reached as far as Atlanta, and was strong enough to convince Scott to apply for a prestigious PhD scholarship.
With the support of the scholarship, Scott began his Otago adventure, and it did not take long before he was hooked. The Department of Tourism provided a focused environment in which to carry out his doctoral studies and he relished the opportunity to study under and alongside world-class tourism researchers.
The Student Learning Centre proved an invaluable resource and the Staff Club became a familiar haunt for Scott and his colleagues. An eclectic mixture of friends, from born and bred Dunedinites to colleagues and fellow students from all over the world, enriched every aspect of his time in Dunedin.
Since moving on from Otago, his fondest memories are those of his everyday life at Otago - relaxed sunny mornings in his flat to Friday afternoons critically debating academic issues with colleagues over a beer - life at Otago balances academic rigour and quality of life in the best possible way.
