Bachelor of Commerce with Honours

The Bachelor of Commerce with Honours - BCom(Hons) is a four-year programme that providing you with advanced, research-based study in a specific business discipline.  The BCom(Hons) degree differentiates you and provides a gateway to postgraduate research degrees such as the PhD.

BCom(Hons) at Otago is not just an additional year of study.  If you are admitted to the honours programme you may be required to take additional papers from their second year onwards in order to prepare them for their advanced study.

The honours programme stimulates and challenges our very best students.   The second and third years typically involve completion of BCom requirements, as well as additional papers as required by your major.  In the fourth year you will undertake a combination of 400-level papers and a research dissertation.

The Otago BCom(Hons)

BCom Required Papers
BCom students are required to complete a set of seven required papers, ensuring that every BCom graduate has a broad understanding of the business environment.

Major
Your Major is the subject area in which you choose to specialise, providing a comprehensive understanding of a chosen area of business.

Elective papers
As well as the BCom required papers, and the papers required for your major, depending on your degree/major, Otago allows students to select a number of Commerce, Humanities or Science papers of your choice.

Admission to the BCom(Hons) Programme

Students are required to enrol at the University of Otago and apply for admission to the BCom(Hons) programme. Admission to the Honours programme is competitive and only the best students gain entry. A B+ average is required.

Students are generally admitted at the end of their first year of study, but it is possible in some subjects to apply at the end of their second year.  On a regular basis, the Departments within the School of Business invite high achieving students to apply for the Honours programme, however, any student with good grades can apply to the programme.

Enhance your BCom(Hons)

Double Honours - two separate fourth year courses are taken in consecutive years requiring the completion of two separate dissertations.  A total of five years of study is needed.

Combined Honours - a blend of papers from two subjects, plus the completion of one dissertation. Four years of study is required.
