Internship Programme
The University of Otago's School of business Internship Programme involves working for an employer for a minimum of six months (maximum of fifteen), while also completing the 18 point BSNX 301 distance learning paper. Your employer will decide on the length of the internship.
A BCom with a 12month internship component will become four years in length, and a BCom(Hons) degree will become five years.
In order to participate on the Internship Programme you must satisfy various requirements, including having completed two years of your BCom or BCom(Hons) degree. However, preparation for this programme begins early in your second year so please register your interest early, or look out for information on this website or around the School of Business.
During your internship you won’t attend lectures or tutorials, instead, you will work for an employer in a paid position in an area relevant to your field of study, whilst completing a range of work-related academic assessments.
Upon successful completion of BSNX 301 you’ll gain 18 points towards your degree. This means you could have a lighter workload the following year and really focus on your other 300-level papers, or you could take on an additional paper to further enhance and strengthen your BCom or BCom(Hons).
You will not be able to complete other papers whilst completing your internship, but will gain extremely valuable work experience which will be crucial when looking for full-time employment after graduation.
It is important to note that you will not be admitted to the Internship Programme should the completion of BSNX 301 coincide with completion of your business degree.
