Undergraduate Study - Preparation

If you're interested in studying business at Otago then you may have questions such as; What grades do I need at secondary school? What subjects are best to take at school? I've never studied Business before, is that a problem?

This page provides a basic introduction to preparing for your business degree.

Still at school and thinking of studying business?

While there are no prerequisite subjects for completing a Bachelor of Commerce we strongly recommend students still at secondary school study English and Maths (e.g. Statistics) to Year 13 (Level 3 NCEA).

Because the business world is truly global we also suggest you study a language - although you can always pick one up as an interest paper once you get to Otago.

Are there limited places available in the BCom programme?

The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) is one of many degrees at Otago with 'managed enrolments'. This means there is a 'cap', or a maxiumum number of students that can enrol in a BCom each year.

Caps have been introduced with selection primarily based on academic merit. The selection process also includes an enhanced system for Māori and Pacific applicants.

Entrance Pathways

There are two pathways for admission to the BCom for new domestic undergraduate students (and certain students who have enrolled at Otago previously):

Further information about University entrance pathways and requirements is available on the University of Otago website.

Don't have university entrance?

If you have not achieved the required entrance qualification at secondary school or failed to gain entry through either Preferential or Competitive entry then you may still be able to complete a Foundation Year.
