Finance is a decision-oriented discipline that is complex, challenging and dynamic. It's about managing money and capital expenditures in the real world: making practical financial decisions that can lead to loss or gain. Finance focuses on two main areas—portfolio theory and investments (the management and pricing of financial securities) and corporate financial management (how businesses make financial decisions, particularly when choosing investment projects and how to pay for them). An understanding of finance is essential to business. Our 17 academic staff teach a comprehensive range of papers in Finance in undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, and in diploma courses. In addition to Finance courses, we also teach service courses in quantitative analysis for the School of Business. We are the only New Zealand-based CFA® partner, one of only 50 or so CFA-partner universities around the world. Research is a significant part of our work and a close relationship and supervisory role is maintained with the research activities of our graduate students, who have the opportunity to integrate their research with the work of staff.
