Roel Wijland started the negligible poetry magazine Hypotaurium at the University of Amsterdam and worked for international advertising agency networks Hakuhodo and TBWA in Europe and Japan. He was a founding partner of innovative brand consultancy BSUR in Amsterdam in 1992 and emigrated to New Zealand in 2003.
His interpretive research is lyrical and has led to heretical initiatives, such as the Material Poetics project at the San Francisco Waste Dump. He works on the ongoing evocative Poetic Brandscapes project and edits an annual poetry publication in consumer behavior (Canaries Coalmines Thunderstones 2010, Coyotes Confessions Totems 2011). The next issue is Clarence Clobbers Tenderly (to be performed at the Consumer Culture Theory conference University of Oxford, August 2012).
Roel is a regular reviewer for journals in the area of consumer culture, branding and poetry. He is the conceptmaker and caretaker of the Brandbach, the virtual cottage that houses the University’s advertising specialisation and that includes courses in creativity, MART 330 and planning, MART 442. He is the director for marketing management of the Master of Business programme and Otago’s international MBA programme. He is the chancellor of the renowned University of St. Bathans in Central Otago.
His areas of expertise for postgraduate supervision include advertising, poetics and material culture.
